The Milky Way, never needed a project so much effort like this. For a long time, I had a panorama of our home galaxy in mind which is suitable for a very large print. This image I wouldn’t be able to shoot in Switzerland that was clear. This was one of the reasons for my fifth trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. Now I was standing there at an altitude of 4000m on Mauna Kea and was collecting one piece of the other of the puzzle for more than eight hours. It didn’t take too long until I felt the altitude. My head was hammering and my body told me I shouldn’t be here for such a long time. But with the goal in my head I finished the image. When I got up the next evening it felt like I had run a marathon.

This spot is breathtaking at night. I was lucky because after this crystal clear night clouds and rain approached the southern part of the island and made it impossible to see the galaxy.

In this night we went out to explore the 1859 lava flow of world’s largest volcano, the Mauna Loa. Dressed as traditional hula dancers we captured the Milky Way galaxy between us. It was adventurous to walk on the uneven and sharp A’a-Lava. An exciting and memorable night.

The volcano Haleakala is one of the main attractions on Maui. Up here you especially meet hundreds of people at sunrise. Therefore, I was surprised that I was the only one that night. Shortly after the set of the moon the Milky Way was shining at its best. When it was standing vertical above the Haleakala Observatory, I though some light painting would be great in the picture. I almost jumped in the car myself when technicians left the summit. I couldn’t believe my luck when I saw the photo on the back of my camera.

Due to that fact, I wanted to shoot a picture of the shiny ball under the Milky Way before it will be gone. On Mauna Kea, all telescopes must leave their site as they got it. During all my travels to Hawaii I spent many hours at South Point. Unless it is the place on the island with the least rain, I was never able to see the stars down there. This time it was about to happen! After a nice dinner under a clear sky there was not a single cloud present event when the astronomical twilight startet. You can image how my pulse skyrocketed. However, the time window to take this panorama was short. Behind the tree the rising moon was already on its way. I jumped out of the car and ran with my gear 200m, like Usain Bold on its best day, through the dried out landscape. Out of breath I was finally able to shoot the galactic panorama of my dreams. Due to the airglow and the rising moon, which gave the clouds at the horizon an orange tint, it should turn out as one of my most colourful astro pictures ever.

And despite I capture the Milky Way for a couple of years now, colors like this I had never seen before!
In this picture, you can see a panoramic shot of the Milky Way and a green layer of airglow above the craters of Mauna Kea on the left-hand side and Mauna Loa on the right-hand side. In the center there lies the city of Hilo which is identifiable on its light under the clouds. The small orange glow on the right side of Hilo is the volcano Kilauea, which was very active that night.

This is my all-time favorite photo of the Milky Way and it was probably a once in a lifetime moment. The picture has been taken when I was invited to visit the facilities of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) on the big island of Hawaii. It is located at the summit of Mauna Kea at 4208m above sea level, the highest sea mountain in the pacific ocean.
Usually the rangers ask everyone to leave the summit after sunset, so was I the day before. Due to my stay at the telescope I was able to spend some quality time in absolute darkness at high altitude. Up here the air is so clear that the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye like almost no place else. Although the temperature dropped drastically after sunset to 1°C and the wind was blowing with 60km/h I was able to capture the center of our universe perfectly.
On the picture you can see the Gemini Telescope in the front and the University of Hawaii Telescope in the background.

At this point my camera was standing at about 3000m capturing more stars than ever. I’ve never seen the Milky Way in such a perfect alignment with the horizon. The clouds blocked most of the light pollution of the city of Hilo on the left and under the Milky Way you can see the volcanoes Mauna Loa (4169m) and on the right hand side Hualalei (2521m). The Image looks rather nice and smooth but when I was standing on these slippery rocks a huge wave almost washed me away. Normally you won't mess with the Hawaiian shore because of the strong current and the sharp lava rocks. Nevertheless I had to take my chances on this beautiful Sunday morning. I visited South Point many times before to spot the perfect location. Of course when I arrived in complete darkness the shore looked very different and it took me a while to find the same rocks again. Also the night before this picture has been taken the sky was covered by clouds. Nevertheless, we went down to the beach and were hoping to catch the sun for a moment. We were lucky! One of the most sacred places of Hawaii lies at 4000m hidden inside the Pu'u Waiau Crater on Mauna Kea, Lake Waiau. The lake is of some importance in Hawaiian mythology. It got its name of one of the snow goddesses called Waiau who used to bathe in it. When I was standing here, on the highest sea mountain of the Pacific Ocean, between red clouds and ancient stones, I imagined that heaven has to be like this.

When we were travelling to the island of Maui, there should be only one night in which the moon wasn’t above the horizon. Therefore, we were driving up the volcano Haleakala in the middle of the night nevertheless the sky was covered with clouds. Arrived at the Haleakala Observatory the moon was about to set and the sky was finally opening up. Due to the fainting moonlight the sky got amazing colors and it almost looks like a sunrise.

"Close your eyes and imagine the place where you found your inner peace. At this magical place, you breathe in deeper and sleep as if on clouds. This one place is for me this little house deep in the jungle of Hawaii. Far away from the tourist attractions. No reception with the mobile phone, the water out of the water tank and powered by solar energy. When I arrive here, after driving through the jungle, I inevitably have a smile on my face.
Here I have experienced everything from storms to clear nights. But every day was a special one. This picture shows the only night so far in which I could see the Milky Way above the house. "

I came back to the place where I've observed the Milky Way for the first time! Pahoa is located on the south shore of the Big Island of Hawaii, which means the galactic core moves from left to right or east to west. The cool thing was that the palms were perfectly aligned with our galaxy when I took this picture. Taking photos of the Milky Way on Hawaii is very special, because this place is very dark and you can wear only a t-shirt. In Switzerland most of the places with little light pollution go hand in hand with cold nights, even in summer.

The chain of craters road is beyond doubt one hell of a unique ride. Located in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park you’re driving for 20miles through the burned lava landscape which leads to the dead end at the southern shore of the big island.Even more special is the ride in a pitch black night without any street lights. After taking some night shots of the Kilauea volcano I drove down the road until I found this place right at sunrise. It felt like the perfect paved road was only made for this photo.

One of my favorite places on earth is the Big Island of Hawaii. The cool thing about it: It's getting bigger and bigger. The youngest of the Hawaiian Islands has still active volcanoes which are creating new land every day. What you can see in this picture is a close up of the Halema'uma'u Crater. It's one of the many craters of the volcano Kilauea. When I visited the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park I just missed the lava overflow, but I though a visit is still worth it. I almost felt the heat when I've seen the picture on the back of my camera. This is where the creation of earth is still in progress.

I've been up to Mauna Kea to watch the sunset for a couple of times now. The sunset was always nice but due to the elevation of 4200m there weren't a lot of clouds in the sky. A nice sunset is just not as spectacular as a sunset with red clouds. This time we were lucky enough to see what I wanted. Reddish clouds above a cinder cone and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescopes. There was even a bit snow on the top. A very special feeling from sea-level to 4200m or from the beach into the snow.
